The Japanese bow, known as the *yumi* (弓), is one of the oldest weapons in Japanese history, with origins stretching back to at least the **Yayoi period**. Early forms were simple wooden bows, which gradually evolved into the distinctive long, asymmetrical composite design seen today.
By the time of the **samurai**, the yumi had become a central battlefield weapon, valued for its power, range, and the skill required to use it effectively—especially from horseback. Archery was considered a key martial discipline for warriors of the period.
With the introduction of firearms in Japan during the 16th century and the major social changes of the **Meiji Restoration**, the military role of the yumi declined sharply.
However, it was preserved as a cultural and spiritual practice through **kyūdō**, which continues today as a form of disciplined training focused on precision, mindfulness, and tradition rather than warfare.
